Ooh! New ColorOn Makeup

Nothing makes a girl happier than playing with new makeup. O.K maybe not you tomboys out there, but you girls don’t have anything in common with me so go chase a ball or something and leave me with my new goodies.

I got ColorOn in the mail this week. ColorOn are these nifty disposable pads with mineral eyeshadow applied to them. The idea behind them is that any girl can easily get professional looking makeup at home without fussing with it too long. I have been playing with makeup since I was about three and even I can’t get my makeup like this. I got the jewel tone kit which includes three different color combinations, Amethyst & Gold, Emeralds & Gold and Sapphires & Gold. There are a bunch of different color kits available and these colors are on the brighter side of the spectrum.

They look exactly like they do in the picture above — a soft cotton pad that is an oval shape slightly larger than your eyelid. The first one I tried for photo shoot I was posing for (figured it was necessary to have perfect makeup). I tried the pair of Amethyst & Gold shadows. The directions are pretty straight forward. Place on eyelid, centered on lash line holding in place with your index and middle fingers in a “peace sign”. Use your free index finger to rub the pad carefully where you want makeup applied and peel pad back. Since the package said “mineral” makeup I assumed it was a powder on the pad but it really is more of a cream shadow. This is pretty smart because the next step is to smudge edges with a clean finger a little bit for a natural edge and cream makeup works well for this. Cream eyeshadow also lasts a lot longer but I felt it was necessary to dust translucent powder over my lids so it lasted longer and didn’t crease.

The Amethyst & Gold looked like an old black eye at first (the whole purple and yellow combination) but once I smudged the dark purple a little it actually looked really nice. The box said that you can actually get two applications per pad which is nice since a box cost $16. Being the frugal type I am, I put the pad back in the plastic covering it came in and used it again the next day. It was a little more subtle but there was plenty of makeup still on the pad. So you can really get 4 applications per pad if you want.

This is what the Amethyst & Gold looked like on me the first day. While the exact color is a little hard to see from the picture you can see that the overall effect is much more subtle than what is on the box.

So this weekend I had a bridal shower and was wearing this really adorable green cardigan. So I figured that the Emerald & Gold pad would match well. The “Emerald and Gold” is really green and orange. They were really bright and I looked like I was going out for Halloween. I wiped it off. Although I loved how ColorOn worked not all of these color combinations are the best. I would go for something more subtle.

Above is the jewel tones “Emerald and Golds”. Looks nice here but not so great in person. Below is the “Animal Instincts” color option. Now where exactly would you wear these out??

Awesome review!!

It seems like a really good idea, especially for the afore mentioned tomboys….
Some one like yourself, who has been playing with make up forever would probably be quite good at applying your own and doing a pretty good job of it - but the tomboy….in a situation where there is no choice but to use make up would find these really great….
also - like you i also think they are really expensive an only someone who uses make-up very occasionally could afford them…

ColorOn looks like an interesting idea.

I think it looks better on you than it did on the model.

I always wondered about those. In the ad pictures it looks un-natural as they don’t blend them into the skin around the edges. I splurged a bit on a nice urban decay palette and the too faced liquid liner palette and it has some of the crazy bright colors like on the pads, but I don’t know if I’d venture to try to apply them freehand myself.

It sounds like it would be fun to play with!

I would definitely try this, but the colors seem really bright; on a fair skinned person it may be a bit much. What are the other color collections?

12 Jen { 03.24.08 at 5:16 pm }

That’s a great idea! I don’t know why it didn’t come about earlier. I would use the more “interesting” ones for date nights and such.

13 Kiraa { 03.24.08 at 5:47 pm }

How exciting. I like that the colors are warm. I just wonder though - is there really a market for this?

What a wonderful idea! If you eyes could get as exact as some of the model pictures; I’d definitely buy these regularly!

18 Alaine { 03.24.08 at 7:20 pm }

It looks like a very interesting concept

19 Miss Belle { 03.24.08 at 7:45 pm }

I have never been able to pull off more than one color eyeshadow at a time. I would love to try this out for special occasions. If I don’t win I might have to go buy some.

20 Monica Alberta { 03.24.08 at 7:50 pm }

I think it’s great if it really comes out the way the models looks. I love the Emerald and Gold colors. It seems like it’s easy to apply and that’s always a plus.

21 Megan { 03.24.08 at 8:02 pm }

I would love to win these! Thanks!

22 dalia { 03.24.08 at 8:04 pm }

wow.. this sounds like it would be fabulous for a makeup-clueless tomboy like myself! :)

23 Joanna { 03.24.08 at 11:00 pm }

it’s too bad the emerald/gold one didn’t turn out. it looks beautiful in the pictures!

24 Ginger { 03.24.08 at 11:10 pm }

What a neat idea! It makes me think of a Simpson’s episode where Homer invents a makeup applicator… though he used a shot gun…

Thanks for the review and please enter me in the contest!

25 Daphne { 03.25.08 at 12:02 am }

This looks kind of cool. But how does it compensate for different lid and eye sizes? I definitely need to give these a try though.

26 Alexandra { 03.25.08 at 12:58 pm }

This looks cool to play around with. I have a feeling I’d try and enhance it with some additional eyeshadow and a proper brush.

27 Brittany { 03.25.08 at 2:38 pm }

I have never seen makeup like this before! Seems like it would be perfect for girls who aren’t really good at applying their own eye makeup. I am skeptical, though, of whether the color is as vibrant as it seems in the professional photos.

28 Little Miss Moneybags { 03.25.08 at 2:55 pm }

Wow, these look fantastic. I can usually get one eye looking awesome but then the other one looks lopsided…something like this might fix that!

29 sabrina { 03.25.08 at 4:32 pm }

Cool…maybe that camo would go over well for halloween? Other than that, not sure I could see a use for it.lol

30 amy { 03.25.08 at 5:31 pm }

Interesting concept. I’m all for shaving time off my morning routine. :)

31 Megan { 03.25.08 at 6:33 pm }

This is a really neat idea! I can never get my eyeshadow to look like the professionals can…I would love to try these out!

32 manna { 03.28.08 at 6:56 pm }
