I have been looking for a few things to decorate my newly refinished bathroom. I know, I am a little ahead of myself because I am not exactly done with the bathroom yet. I still have to replace the trim that was disintegrating and therefore was removed and get the tub and shower tile refinished. I am saving money for vacation right now so I may have to hold off on doing the tile until next year. I am just keeping the shower curtain closed at all times for now.
Anyway, I want a couple of apothecary jars to decorate in there. I don’t have a good place for cotton balls or q-tips and the jars could look very pretty in there. So I have been keeping an eye out and this is what I have found from most expensive to least expensive …
Restoration Hardware
$26 - $159 (the $26 dollar one is pretty tiny). Expensive but very pretty. I feel bad spending $26 on a jar. I think I could save that to put into the tub.
Abigails
Now, I saw these in Real Simple and they said the price was $55 - $150. So I went to the website and they don’t have prices! I am not shopping there based on principle now. That is not very helpful (not to mention I would have to sell plasma to afford these).
The Container Store

These are your simple cotton jars and the prices are good, $7.99 - $9.99. But then you have to count in $8.50 shipping (which is a lot for 1 jar). They also have a metal top. In the bathroom with water flecks, toothpaste and dust the metal tops can get a little yucky. I have a metal flip top garbage can in there and I am constantly wiping the thing with a sponge.
Linens n’ Things
They have a white swab jar that says cotton on front for $14.99. These are a good buy and with the 20% off coupon from the weekly circulars they are even a better buy. But these are not exactly what I was looking for and honestly in person they look a little cheap. I really didn’t like that they said cotton on them too.
Ikea - Winner!

Not as pretty as Restoration Hardware’s but I am only 26 and I need something to aspire to. They are all glass and they are clean, simple looking and only $2.99!!! I found a winner. Only problem is that they are still building the Ikea in Orlando and I will have to wait a while. A good deal is worth the wait, right.

The only thing is in a bathroom with a hard tile floor if you do not have a safe place for them it could be easy to fall off a shelf and break. In my bathroom at home I just store the Q-tips and cotton balls in the bag/box they came in for the price of $0.00. Just an idea.
I am going to assume safely, SavingWithMe that you are a boy. Because only a boy would have the idea of using the box or bag they come in as a display. I am talking about decorating. Something your bachelor pad is short of I assume.
The problem with glass is that it might get water stains on it too, depending on where you put it.
I have a glass container with a metal top I got from Pier one on sale, in 3 different sizes to hold my hairbands, Q-tips and cotton balls/swabs..
And I find the top gets a bit grimy yes (nothing a little polish won’t fix), but the glass, surprisingly, got quite dusty, dirt-streaked and water-spotted…
I’d suggest going for a ceramic set.. but the only thing is you can’t see what’s in them.. dilemma, dilemma…
Anyway, the Ikea ones look really cute!!! Have you tried on Ebay as well? Some of them are dirt cheap on there, but depending on the seller, shipping costs may kill those savings and/or they’ll get damaged along the way.
I don’t know I would have voted for the Container Store…:-)
I also agree with Saving with me…why add stuff…why not just use the boxes adn recycle…be green…;-)
Fabulously Broke has a good point here. I love the clear glass though. I may stick with that one. –JF
Your line about being 26 and having to aspire to something cracked me up! Add 20 years to that and you have my age.
I’m new to your website so don’t know much about what you’ve posted in the past. Was wondering if you ever shop at TJ Maxx or Marshall’s? They are everywhere in Mass. and offer great deals on clothes, shoes and home stuff. They also frequently put things on clearance.
Mom of 3,
I find that TJ Maxx near me is best for handbags and shoes and Marshalls for clothing. — jf
I do shop at both TJ Maxx and Marshalls. They do have great deals but they can be hit or miss. You have to have a few hours to pick through the racks. Which I always have
